Goodbye 2010…Here’s hoping for 2011

2010 has certainly had its ups and downs and I’m looking forward to see what 2011  brings.  There was too much sadness and stress this year.  I’m really hoping 2011  brings happier and calmer times.

Something I’ve been trying to do is to be positive and look on the bright side, even if it seems difficult.  Therefore, I’m compling a list of things/people/etc. that I’m thankful for.

1.My husband. I have absolutely no idea what I would do without him.  He’s always there to comfort me and listen (when I need someone to talk to.) He is awesome at helping out around our home.  We make a good team and have many of the same interests. I can be my complete self and act stupid around him and not worry about what he thinks.  I love being able to come home from work and relax on the couch with him and watch a show.  I’m tempted to say he’s the reason I’m able to keep a positive outlook on things.

2. Pyper.  Although she’s a brat, she can pretty much make me smile even when I’m in a bad mood.  She’s crazy, funny and weird and I love that about her.  For example, this morning before work she was running around like crazy!! And now she’s sleeping on the stove. lol.

3. My family. This includes my immediate family, extended family and in-laws.  I love that we’ve been spending more time with my relatives and have gotten to know them better, thanks also paritally to facebook.  Now being married for over a year, I’m really beginning to realize how much my parents have done for me for my entire life (can’t even imagine how they kept everything together once they had us!)  I’m also feel very lucky for having in-laws that I get along with and enjoy spending time with.

4. My friends. Even though I don’t get to see them as much as I’d like (thanks to life), I’m still really thankful to have them in my life.

 5. My job.  I love my job and my class is awesome.  They make me laugh by the funny things they say.  I’m also just thankful to have a job. Oh, and Kyle’s job too.

6. My health.  Enough said.

There are more things I’m thankful for and help keep me thinking optimistically and positively, but that’s enough for the time being.

Pyper Likes To Eat

Her full name is Pyper Callie Bisignani.  Footnote: Callie was my first petwho basically lived for food.  Pyper carries this name in not just in honor, but in spirit as well.

For example, Pyperpurrs twice a day, breakfast and lunch.  She only meows when I am loweing her food bowl on to her placemat.  Yes, you read that right, herplacemat.

Pyper has shown a great interest in a variety of food, including Hamburgers (specifically Burger King), London Broil, Jade plants, and Marinara sauce.  We’ve seen her head in the measuring cup after measuring Milk.  And tonight we just spotted her licking clean the bowl used to make the Penne with Vodka Sauce.  She also doesn’t shy away from Macaroni and Cheese and will literally climb up your leg if you are holding Turkey.

In fact the only thing I have seen Pyper not like is Lucky Charms – with which she batted it under the refrigerator and we have yet to see them since.

Being an adult is exhausting!

If anyone had told me and Kyle how difficult it was to be an adult a few years ago, neither of us would have believed it.  With Kyle working full-time and me working 5 half days a week (which feels like more), there is no doubt in our minds that  it’s exhausting and difficult to be an adult.  But…we’re getting there.  I’ve gotten more comfortable with my new job and the requirements—time, planning, etc.  Now I’m trying to tie in all the things that have to get done around here on a daily/weekly basis—cleaning, food shopping, laundry, dinner, and all of the other little things.  I’m attempting to get the food shopping and laundry done before I go into work—-yet Kyle and I have spent the past 2 Saturday nights (after 11pm) at ShopRite.  Whoops.  And for next week, I’m no where close to being done with my lesson plans for the week….Tomorrow we’re going to PopPop’s and then hopefully apple picking with Christine and Marc!

As I said before…we’re getting there.  We have to work on our time management a bit more, but also need to remember to RELAX!! I’m so grateful for everything Kyle has done to help around here though.  He has no problem helping with setting up and cleaning up from dinner, emptying the dishwasher, helping out with dinner.  He’s awesome at making chicken and cheese quesadillas (after I cook the chicken.)  Today we pretty much cleaned the entire apartment together.

Although we are really busy and don’t have a lot of free time, it has made me appreciate the time we get to spend together so much more.  I’m actually somewhat grateful for that.

Anniversary Plans

Our 1st wedding anniversary is coming up in just over 2 weeks and I am really excited! We finally have some plans that we both have agreed on! Our anniversary falls on a Sunday, so we figured we’d spend the weekend doing a few different things.

Friday night: Drive-in movie theater in Warwick, NY.  Not sure what we’ll see yet.

Saturday night: Dinner.

Sunday: Beach!!

I just didn’t want to spend our anniversary doing the things we normally do on weekends, like ironing, sitting around and watching tv, playing on the computer, etc.  For the next few years, our anniversary will fall during the work week, so we might as well do something fun on our anniversary this year since the next few will be spent at work!

I wasn’t quite able to get Kyle to agree on going away for the weekend (although he suggested a cruise.) The cruise, though, won’t work out with our schedules.  So we’ll spend our anniversary locally, but Kyle said that we can go on a cruise in February instead!  Also helps that we have enough credit card points to get a $400 gift card to Carnival, meaning one of us will be cruising for free!! The goal is to gather enough credits to get another $200 gift card before we book the cruise.

I Have to Clean That Too??

Let’s just say that before we got our apartment, cleaning wasn’t something I knew a lot about.  At home (as in my parent’s house), I kept my room pretty decent (no big piles or anything), I would clean up after myself, help out folding laundry, and empty the dishwasher.  I NEVER dusted.  That was pretty much the extent of cleaning I did though.  Now, I have an entire apartment to keep clean!! Over the past year, I have learned a lot about keeping our home clean…It’s actually pretty funny to think that Kyle knew better than I did!

For example:

Apparently you’re supposed to dust the lightswitches? Bar for the shower curtain? Top of the toilet paper roll?

There’s a lot more that I can’t think of at the moment, but will be added when I do.  I’ll also add more as I learn about them.  It’s never ending!!

And then there’s laundry…I’ve been doing my own laundry for years now, but one thing I never really was sure of how to wash were yellows.  For the first few months (maybe even 6 months) of our marriage, I was keeping the yellows aside waiting until we had enough and then I would just wash the yellows together.  This method was working just fine for me until Kyle brought it up to his mom one day.  I got made fun of big time for my different piles of laundry: Towels, Sheets, Whites, Colors, Jeans, and Yellows.  Now I know how to wash them though, so I guess that’s a plus. :-)

Update on Flowers

Here are some pictures of the flowers I planted a while ago.  For the most part, they are doing well!  Now that it’s been in the 80′s the past few days, the one set of flowers doesn’t seem that it is doing as well.  I’m not sure if it’s something to do with how the sun hits it or what.

Flowers Planted… *Fingers Crossed*

As I’ve stated before, Kyle and I don’t have green thumbs, but we’ve decided to test our luck anyway.  Weeks ago we bought pretty window flower baskets for our balcony and yesterday we finally bought flowers.  Today I planted them! They are heat tolerant, so that should help us out to some extent…I hope!!  I’ll post some pictures below…hopefully in a few weeks, they’ll look just as good!

Pyper Eats Plants…

Kyle and I need no help at all when it comes to killing plants, but Pyper has decided otherwise.  She’s been eating our jade plant (the one we got the night before our weddding.)  We had the jade plant on a shelf in the living room and it was doing OK (for us taking care of it!) Pyper has recently discovered she loves to chew on its branches.  There are only two options for a new location for the plant: In a cabinet or outside.  The jade plant needs sun, so the cabinet is a no….and who would put a plant in a cabinet to begin with? So the jade plant is now outside on the table….I think it’s probably still too cold for it to sit outside, but the only other alternative is to have Pyper continue to chew on its branches….

The plant looks pretty pathetic.

*Picture to be added when my laptop cooperates.

Not-So Green Thumbs…

Apparently Kyle and I are unable to keep plants alive….or rather, the one that is still alive isn’t looking so good.

The night before our wedding after our rehearsal dinner, we invited the bridal party and a few friends over for a game night.  Jenn and Kacey brought us a jade plant as a “apartment warming” gift.  As of tomorrow, we’ll be married for 9 months and the plant is still alive! Except…..that it isn’t looking so good.  I really wish I had taken a picture of it when we first got it.  When we got the plant, we obviously kept it at our apartment.  We didn’t sleep at the apartment the night before the wedding or the wedding night, but we knew we’d be back on Sunday.  On Monday, we were leaving for Hawaii for (just about) 2 weeks.  I didn’t want the plant to die while we were away, so I brought the plant to my mom so she could take care of it.  Little did I know, but jade plants don’t need to be watered that often.  In the summer or warmer months, it should be watered every 4 weeks.  In the colder/cooler, months, it should be watered approximately every 3 weeks.  Needless to say, my mom didn’t have to water it at all while we were in Hawaii.  Anyway, so when we got back and officially moved into our apartment (not that the one night before our honeymoon didn’t count), we put the plant outside to get some sun.  We haven’t been keeping track of how many weeks since it’s been watered, but I thought we were doing a pretty good job…..not so much.

At my school, the staff celebrates birthdays and 1/2 birthdays (if your birthday is in the summer.)  Since my birthday is in July, my 1/2 birthday was celebrated in January.  The 2nd grade teacher had my name.  Usually we just do breakfast for the staff and make a sign that says “Happy Birthday (teacher’s name).” Well, the 2nd grade teacher went all out.  Not only did she provide breakfast, but she also had her students each make me a card (they were my kindergarten students), a scratch off lottery ticket and a plant.  I figured I’d bring the plant home because my classroom gets so hot (they really turn the heat up high) and I didn’t want the plant to die.  It died within 3 days at athe apartment. :(   I don’t have a picture of it.

Then comes St. Patrick’s Day.  My mom bought us a shamrock plant.  Since it’s been so nice out, I’ve had it sitting outside on the table….it’s practically dead.

And finally…..Easter.  We bought Kyle’s mom, his grandfather and aunt an Easter plant.  We didn’t give his mom the plant on Easter because we didn’t think she’d want to bring it home that day, so we figured we’d give it to her the following day (when she met Pyper.) Well, we forgot to give it to her.  We knew we’d see her later in the week for pizza (on Friday), so we decided that we’d take care of it until then.  We watered it and kept it away from Pyper (who has decided she likes to eat plants.)  We finally gave her the plant (tulips) last night…..they looked horrible!!!!

The tulips actually looked worse when we gave her them.  Kyle held the tulips in the car and at least 4 petals fell off….However, we made up for giving her a mostly dead plant with a bag of combos.

Our goal for the spring and summer is to plant some flowers on our balcony.  I’m afraid that we’re going to kill them as well….wish us lots of luck!!! I’m not sure how I didn’t learn how to plant and take care of flowers….my mom plants flowers all the time and I helped water them.

Crazy Cat

We should have changed Pyper’s name to Crazy Cat, but yesterday we bought her a collar and name tag with Pyper written on it, so it’s official;  We’re keeping her name. :-) I love the name Pyper, but Crazy Cat would have been a better fit!

We determined Pyper is about 10 months old, give or take a few days.  She came from a foster home with a group of other kitties.  She was rescued from a kill shelter in Newark in February.  She loves our home.  She has literally explored EVERY inch of our apartment.  Yesterday morning I was putting my contacts in and she jumped up onto the bathroom counter.  She explored the bookcase (not as interested in it as Elroy was!) Pyper wants to go on the balcony terribly.  On Saturday night Kyle and I decided to grill hot dogs for dinner.  Pyper sat in front of the door, trying to claw and climb at the screen door.  Then on one of these beautiful afternoons, Kyle and I sat outside for a bit and Pyper sat at the screen and tried to get out.

Pyper will literally follow us everywhere almost all day.  I’m so happy we adopted her, even if she’s a bit of a handful.  She loves food. Last night she actually licked some spaghetti sauce from Kyle’s plate.

I’m sure Pyper thinks we’re trying to starve her (which I can ensure you, we’re not!) I’m taking her to the vet on Tuesday morning, so I’ll have to remember to ask about this.  Since day one, Pyper loves our kitchen counters.  I’m not a huge fan of her walking around the counters.  She jumps on them mostly when we are preparing food or if we’re getting something to drink from the fridge.

Did I mention she also prefers tap water over bottled water?

We have learned we can’t keep things in the sink.

Anyway, I researched online how to discourage cats from walking on the counters and one of the methods I found was the aluminum foil method.  Our kitchen counters are COVERED with foil.

Cats aren’t supposed to like the way foil sounds or feels.

Pyper has jumped onto the counters since they’ve been covered with the foil and all I have to do is walk in the kitchen and look at her and she’ll jump down.  We can tell she isn’t happy with the foil, but she still jumps up!

Apparently, she really wanted to check out the pot from the sauce that was soaking in the sink….it made us do this.

The past few days, Pyper was joined me for lunch at the table as well.  Pyper will also try to join us when we’re eating dinner in the living room….hence the spaghetti sauce from last night.

We’re going to try this method for a while and see what happens over the next week or so.  Our counters look pretty ridiculous, but if this works, it’s not a forever thing anyway.  Pyper can’t control herself with food at all.
